Typography Book Covers

For my Typography class, we have been making example compositions using an author, book title, publish date, and first paragraph of the first chapter. In my case, it is Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar. A restriction for our compositions is that the typeface we use has to be created by or before our the publish date of the book: 1963 for mine. The assignment for this blog is to look on The Book Cover Archive website and choose 10 examples of the typefaces made on/before 1963 in use on book covers and the 5 additional examples of other type-based covers we like.

This is Cooper Black typeface.

Also Cooper Black typeface.

The last six are Courier, another 1960s font. Unfortunately, these eight are the only examples they have on the site for these two typefaces in particular. However, on to the additional five!

 This is the Agency typeface.
This fantastic piece is made out of Hand Lettered typeface.

Also Hand Lettered.

This fascinating book cover is composed of multiple typefaces including Rosewood, Alternate Gothic, Monotype Script, and ITC Edwardian Script.

And this beauty is made of Poplar, Memphis, and Black Oak.
