Wordless Playlist

The goal of this post is to give a five "wordless" song playlist that captures the first paragraph of a book assigned in Typography class. In my case, that book was The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath.

I thought this song was quintessentially New York. I can see all the busybodies rushing around, and still there is the lazy jazz that floats through every once in a while.

Beethoven's 5th is an incredibly recognizable song, yet I believe it captures the slow decent into chaos which mirrors both the book and Plath's decent into suicide around the time The Bell Jar was published in 1963.

This song brings to mind a sort of sad love story. Although the book isn't necessarily a love story, it covers a range of emotions including moments of hope and sadness, and maybe the occasional glimmer of happiness or excitement.

This song begins with a few lonely clangs of a bell then more sad, grief-stricken tones follow. It almost feels like this could be the end of the book and the end of Plath's life coming to fruition.

Another sad piece that commemorates Plath's turmoil throughout the book (which has been considered semi-autobiographical) and her own life. .
